Stuck in an Exercise Rut? Let's Shake Things Up
When’s the last time your workout routine felt exciting? If the answer is uhhh… I can’t remember, you’re not alone. Sometimes, even the best exercise habits start to feel like a chore.
Here’s the thing: you don’t always need more motivation, you might just need a change of perspective (and maybe a change of scenery).
Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Mix It Up
Longer days, warmer weather, and that little spark of energy you get from sunshine is really a good recipe for a change in your routine. Summer practically begs you to move your body outside and the beauty of outdoor movement is that it doesn’t have to look like your usual “structured” workout.
If you’ve been doing the same routine for months (or years), your mind and body might both need a break from the “usual.” This doesn’t mean you’re quitting, it means you’re recharging.
Motivation vs. Discipline
Here’s a little mindset shift: stop waiting to feel motivated to work out. Motivation is fickle. Discipline? That’s where the magic happens. Movement becomes part of your daily rhythm, like brushing your teeth or making coffee. You just do it.
But discipline doesn’t have to feel rigid. It can look like weaving movement into your everyday life in ways that feel fresh and fun.
Fresh Ideas to Get You Moving
Playground laps: While the kids are climbing and sliding, you’re walking brisk laps around the play area.
Hills for the win: Find a hill near the playground and walk or jog up and down for a quick cardio boost.
Stadium stairs: Got time to kill while waiting for sports practice to wrap up? Those bleachers are calling your name.
Walk + talk: Invite a friend or family member for a walk. Bonus: walking side-by-side is one of the best ways to have deep conversations or brainstorm new ideas. (Seriously…science says movement boosts problem-solving!)
Know Yourself, Then Move Yourself
Everyone’s preferences for exercise look different and that’s a good thing. What matters most is finding what works for you right now. If your usual workout isn’t sparking joy, change it. If you’ve been stuck waiting for motivation, replace it with consistent, small actions.
The more you mix things up, the more likely you are to stick with it and the more benefits your body and brain will reap.
So this week, try something new. Change your route, change your pace, or change your workout partner. Who knows? Your best idea yet might just come to you halfway through a walk.
